#TrashChallenge 1

Pequeña porción en el Río Monquirá (Sogamoso), 15.3.2019.

Inspired by the broad participation in the global #trashchallenge, we as Fundacíon Montecito decided not to miss this great opportunity and to contribute a small cleaning activity from Sogamoso. Since our focus within our NGO’s agenda lies especially in the conservation of our waters, we chose our spot to be a section of Sogamoso’s river Monquira. Walking upstream along the course of the river, we found a segment polluted primarily by plastics and residual waste, making it a perfect location for our mission. So we put on our gumboots and gloves and got started.

After about five bags of trash this section of the river could actually again be seen as such. What we found during this time evoked a whole variety of emotions – from being utterly surprised and confused up to disbelieve and sadness. My personal favourite would probably be the bunch of soggy oranges, all squishy and almost dissolving, which still give me curiosity about what they had done to deserve ending up there. Although the surreal amount of bones found (probably/hopefully all from cows) raises just as many questions.

Although it only has been a small contribution to this big movement, I’m happy with the results. It shows that huge change can be created when we all work together hand in hand. Talking about it, I would like to add that these cleaning actions are very important and actually necessary when trying to undo parts of the damage already existing. But – and this is a huge “but” - it doesn’t tackle the actual problem. It is not enough just to collect garbage that has already been dumped. But we must hinder the illegal dumping of new garbage or better the mere production of it. The spirit that we feel trying to clean up the mess we’ve done must be transferred into decisions and actions that will actually hinder us from heading into the same mess deeper and deeper. What has happened within the #trashchallenge does prove that change is possible.

Inspirados por la amplia participación en el #trashchallenge global, nosotros, como Fundación Montecito, decidimos no perder esta gran oportunidad y contribuir con una pequeña actividad de limpieza en Sogamoso. Debido a que nuestro enfoque dentro de la agenda de nuestra ONG se basa especialmente en la conservación de nuestras aguas, elegimos como lugar una sección del Río Monquirá, de Sogamoso. Al caminar río arriba a lo largo del río, encontramos un segmento contaminado principalmente por plásticos y desechos residuales, lo que lo convierte en un lugar perfecto para nuestra misión. Así que nos pusimos nuestras botas impermeables y guantes, y empezamos.

Después de unas cinco bolsas de basura, esta sección del río podía verse de nuevo como es. Lo que encontramos durante este tiempo evocó una gran variedad de emociones, desde estar completamente sorprendida y confundida, hasta la incredulidad y la tristeza. Mi favorito personal probablemente fue un manojo de naranjas empapadas, todas blandas y casi disueltas, que aún me dan curiosidad sobre lo que habían hecho para merecer terminar allí. Aunque la cantidad surrealista de huesos encontrados (probablemente / con suerte todas de vacunos) plantea muchas preguntas.

Aunque solo ha sido una pequeña contribución a este gran movimiento, estoy feliz con los resultados. Muestra que se puede crear un gran cambio cuando todos trabajamos juntos de la mano. Hablando de eso, me gustaría agregar que estas acciones de limpieza son muy importantes y realmente necesarias cuando se intenta deshacer partes del daño ya existente. Pero, y este es un gran "pero", no aborda el problema real. No basta con recoger la basura que ya se ha tirado. Debemos frenar el vertido ilegal de basura nueva o, mejor dicho, la mera producción de la misma. El espíritu que sentimos al tratar de limpiar el desastre que hemos hecho debe ser transferido a decisiones y acciones que realmente nos impidan caer en el mismo desastre más y más profundamente. Lo que ha ocurrido dentro del #trashchallenge prueba que el cambio es posible.
